“The Legend of the Dogwood”
The legend of the Dogwood comes from a traditional poem. In Jesus’ time, the Dogwood tree grew to a great size, as large as an oak tree. It was used to make the cross. When the tree realized that Jesus was hung on it, it made the dogwood sad. Jesus, sensing this sadness, promised the dogwood tree that it would never again grow large enough to build a cross. In remembrance, the dogwood now has four petals in the shape of a cross. The middle of the flower has a ring of stamens, resembling a crown of thorns. At the edge of each petal is an indentation like that of a nail hole, each stained with the color of the Saviour’s blood.
