How Is Saint Florian?

Saint Florian is a saint of fortitude – moral courage. Living in Rome during the Diocletian persecution, Saint Florian was a Roman officer in modern Austria and military administrator of Noricum. He was also secretly a Christian. Florian passively refused to enforce the anti-Christian laws in Noricum. Eventually this “neglect” was caught by higher Roman officials and Aquilinus investigated Florian by ordering him to execute a group of Christians and sacrifice to the pagan Roman gods.

When St. Florian refused, he was scourged with a club of spikes, flayed alive, and dropped into a river with a heavy stone tied around his neck. He died a martyr’s death, but his courage was obvious in his life as well as in his death.

Saint Florian is the patron of firefighters because he was the leader of an elite Roman fire brigade.

Saint Florian is also the patron of Austria and Poland because some of his relics were moved to those locations and a great devotion to him sprang up around them.

Saint Florian is a great saint to adopt for anyone needing fortitude in the face of persecution or the courage to stand against evils in society.

Saint Florian’s feast day is May 4th.
